Patriarch Kirill: Our flock is both in Russia and Ukraine and we ardently pray for the restoration of peace

His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia, speaking on May 17, 2022, in the Council of the Federation of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation in the context of Parliamentary Meetings, recalled the spiritual unity of the peoples of Russia and Ukraine.

“Our flock is in both Russia and Ukraine, and we are ardently praying for the restoration of peace, so that the Lord may overthrow the designs of the evil external power feeding hatred”, said the Primate of the Russian Orthodox Church addressing the assembly.

“One cannot but also say that the schism in the Ukrainian Orthodoxy is another link in this vicious chain of divisions. The actions of the Patriarchate of Constantinople, which has legalized the schism, deserve to be historically compared to Uniatism. The eventual goal of this project is to make the Ukrainian Orthodox Church re-orientated so as to be no longer capable of service for the unity of the Russian and Ukrainian peoples”, His Holiness continued.

“The political goal of creating all these autocephalies, all these schisms is to weaken the influence of the Orthodox Church, one Orthodox Church of Rus’, Ukraine and Belarus, with the use of ideological clichés to enkindle enmity and to create new myths that would alienate one people from another”, His Holiness Patriarch Kirill stressed.

The Primate of the Russian Orthodox Church also called upon the parties to the conflict in Ukraine to do all that is possible to avoid victims among peaceful civilians, reports Patriarchia ru. with reference to the Synodal Department for the Church’s Relations with Society and the Mass Media.

“Yes, the military have really accompanied the whole human history after the Fall. As one of the sad manifestations of sinfulness, military confrontations will most probably continue accompanying the human history further. However, even in the situations of armed conflicts, a human can and should preserve human dignity and take care of the dignity of those around”, His Holiness said.

“The exception of prohibited methods of military actions, protection of the civil population, observance of the international humanitarian law, respect for captives and the injured - this is what I as Patriarch of All Russia call upon the parties of the conflict and ask them to do all that is possible to avoid victims among civilians”, concluded the Primate of the Russian Church.
