Metropolitan Hilarion: Orthodoxy is a traditional confession in Kazakhstan professed by several million people

Metropolitan Hilarion pointed out the great worth of the Orthodox Church for Kazakhstan when commenting on January events in the country at the request of “The Church and the World” TV programme’s host.
“The former President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbayev, once said that his country had two wings: Islam and Orthodoxy,” the DECR chairman underscored. “Orthodoxy is a traditional confession in Kazakhstan professed by several million residents, mostly the Russian-speaking people. However, the Orthodox Church is open not only to them, but also to all-comers of any background.”
The Russian Orthodox Church and the Muslim community in Kazakhstan “have stable long-standing relations of cooperation and partnership. When the unrest began, like-mindedness of the traditional confessions found its expression in joint appeals of the metropolitan and the mufti to the people of Kazakhstan,” said Metropolitan Hilarion.
