In the evening of September the 7th, 2022, the feast of the Nativity of our Lord God and Saviour Jesus Christ, His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia celebrated Great Vespers at the Cathedral Church of Christ the Saviour in Moscow.

His Holiness was assisted by Metropolitan Pavel of Krutitsy and Kolomna, Patriarchal vicar of the Metropolis of Moscow; Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, chairman of the Department for External Church Relations; Metropolitan Dionisy of Voskresensk, chancellor of the Moscow Patriarchate; Metropolitan Feognost of Kashira, head of the Synodal Department for Monasteries and Monastics; Archbishop Leonid of Klin, Patriarchal Exarch for Africa; Bishop Feodorit of Zvenigorod, rector of the Moscow Theological Academy; Protopresbyter Vladimir Divakov, secretary to the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia in Moscow; Archimandrite Alexy (Turkov), personal secretary to the His Holiness Patriarch Kirill; and Moscow clergy.

Among the worshippers were diocesan bishops of the Metropolis of Moscow; vicars and deans of the Diocese of Moscow; abbots and abbesses of Patriarchal monasteries and convents; Moscow clergy, members of parish councils in Moscow; staff members of synodal departments and numerous believers.

Present were also V. Legoida, head of the Synodal Department for the Church’s Relations with Society and Mass Media; and N. Derzhavin, deputy head of the Patriarchal Press Service.

The Great Vespers hymns were sung by the choir of the Church of Christ the Saviour conducted by I. Tolkachev.

The Patriarchal divine service was broadcast live by TV Tsentr, Spas and Soyuz TV channels and Patriarchia.ru, the official portal of the Russian Orthodox Church. The broadcast was commented by Prof A. Svetozarsky, Moscow Theological Academy.

During the Entrance of the Gospel, His Holiness Patriarch Kirill elevated Archbishop Leonid of Klin to the rank of metropolitan. He was elevated due to his appointment as Patriarchal Exarch for Africa with instructions to act as administrator of the Diocese of North Africa and temporary administrator of the Diocese of South Africa, according to the Holy Synod Decision of December 29, 2021 (Minutes No. 100).

The first Protodeacon of the Cathedral Church of Christ the Saviour, Constantin Bargan was elevated to the rank of patriarchal archdeacon in acknowledgement of his diligent service of the Church of God.

Patriarch Kirill read the beginning of the Gospel from the old alter Gospel of the time of Empress Elisabeth Petrovna, which is brought out of the sanctuary twice a year - on the Nativity and Pascha Great Vespers.

After the service, Metropolitan Pavel of Krutitsy and Kolomna extended festive greetings to His Holiness Patriarch Kirill on behalf of the Holy Synod. His Holiness was also greeted by representatives of the Moscow diocesan youth department Ruslan Moshurov, chairman of the Association of young Oncologists in Russia, and Maria Gerego, precentor of the Gethsemane youth choir of the Southeast vicariate of the Diocese of Moscow.

His Holiness Patriarch Kirill addressed himself to the congregation with a Patriarchal homily. This was followed by the traditional greeting extended to their ruling bishop by the episcopate, clergy and laity of the Diocese of Moscow.
